What Are The Seven Spirits of God in Revelation?

Today, let’s identify who and what are the seven Spirits of God. The Scripture below tells us that the seven lamps of fire burning before the throne of God, in heaven, are indeed the seven Spirits of God.

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”

Revelation 4:5

Therefore, the Bible does indeed tell us about these Spirits of God. Of course, it does for the Lord God hates ignorance. He informs us through His Word.

If the Prophet John informed us of their identity then another prophet of God would have done the same thing before.

As a result, let’s go search for him and learn what he says about their identity.

So, let’s visit the Old Testament (OT) for this information.

Who Are The Seven Spirits of God?

7 Spirits of God Bible Verse

Ezekiel, the priest of God, the son of Buzi, while he was in captivity “in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar” had visions of God in heaven, (Ezekiel 1:1-3).

His visions of God in heaven confirmed what John saw, in his vision, in Revelation 4:5.

These visions validate that the “seven lamps of fire burning before the throne,” are true “the seven Spirits of God,” (Revelation 4:5).

Now, we see that the seven lamps of fire are really spirits. Nevertheless, they appear as lamps of burning fire when they move.

What Are The Symbols of the Seven Spirits of God?

This phenomenon has played out in heaven before.

For example:

“As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.”

Ezekiel 1:13

They appear as lights or lightning. But they are the Spirits of the Lord.

“And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.”

Ezekiel 1:14

Thus, the “burning lamps of fire” symbolize the seven Spirits of God. Subsequently, we see the menorah as the symbol of the seven Spirits of God.

The Seven Spirits of God

The Seven Spirits of God In The Earth

Who has the seven Spirits of God? Revelation 3:1 tells us who owns them. He who sits on the throne has the spirits.

Nevertheless, this is a picture of these spirits in heaven. What’s the picture like on earth?

The Bible also supplies a picture of them on the earth but from heaven. For them to come to earth, he who possesses them must be on the earth.

Therefore, the Lord God became a man and left heaven and visited earth. While he was here his seven Spirits were with him.

“And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”

Revelation 5:6

On the earth, the Lamb that was slain is Jesus Christ, and he is also “the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth”, (Revelation 5:6).

They are not only Spirits of God, but they also have names. Next, we shall investigate their names.

What Is Another Name for the 7 Spirits of God?

“Because the Lord God is a Spirit and He has seven other Spirits, His image is spiritual. You wouldn’t see it in a mirror. Therefore, when God made man in His image, He injected His seven Spirits into him.

The first man Adam had the image of God intact. However, when he died he lost it. Consequently, all of his descendants (all of humanity) have to wait to receive the reinstallation of the seven Spirits of God (His image).

He Re-installs His Image

However, when we are born again according to the teachings of Jesus Christ he re-installs the seven Spirits of God into us, but they are inactive.

Therefore, activation of them is not automatic. To activate them, the Christian person must seek this, pursue it, and realize it for him or herself. But such a one needs to activate them to unleash the awesomeness of God on the earth.

It’s then and only then that we will know and experience the resurrection power of Jesus Christ as we declare things to others and see them happen.

All Believers need the full complement of these Spirits of God. We need them to operate as effective sons of God. Without them we are powerless.

God Consists of How Many Spirits?

A very important feature of those with the full quota is that they live above sickness and disease. Jesus was never sick. None of his disciples experienced any unhealthiness while he was physically with them.

And later, in his physical absence, all those who accepted and believed his teachings through the church lived victoriously above ill health.

As a matter of fact, they were the ones spreading the glad tidings of the Kingdom of God; consequently, they couldn’t be sick and proclaim victory over sin. But we must be born again.

This was how the apostles of the early church had so much power after Jesus returned to heaven. They operated in the image of God.

Therefore, God consists of eight spirits—seven Spirits of God and the Spirit, which is God. This means that eight, and not seven, is the number of God.

Does Satan Have Spirits?

This is not a new concept in the Word of God. We know that everything the Lord has Satan tries to counterfeit. Because the Lord has seven other spirits, Satan also has seven other evil spirits.

Their names appear in Proverbs 6:16–19. They are the seven abominations to God; the seven spirits that He hates.

They are a proud appearance, a liar, a killer of innocent people, an evil mind, and a person eager to create mischief, false witnesses, and a person that creates disunity among friends, family, or Believers and wherever you find any of these Satan is present.

The Lord explains it this way. He says that when an evil spirit is cast from a person if that spirit returns and finds its former home empty, it goes for “seven other spirits” and together they re-establish residence in that person’s body.

They are attempting to mimic the number of the Spirits of God. Therefore, that person now has eight “unclean” spirits residing in him (Matthew 12:43-45).

What Are The Names Of The Seven Spirits of God?

The Lord God who has seven other Spirits sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to save humanity from sins. But He didn’t send him alone. He came with the seven Spirits of God.

To express this more scripturally and succinctly, Jesus is the seven Spirits of God. (Revelation 5:6).

Further, the Bible attesting that he is the seven Spirits of God informs:

“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

And [1] the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, [2] the spirit of wisdom and [3] understanding, [4] the spirit of counsel and [5] might, [6] the spirit of knowledge and of [7] the fear of the Lord;

And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked” (Isaiah 11:1-4).

They Are Descendants of Whom?

Isaiah, the prophet of God, reiterated this truth with another pronouncement. Speaking of Jesus Christ he foretold:

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.”

Isaiah 61:1

“To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.”

Isaiah 61:2

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”

Isaiah 61:3

In closing, as we grow in the knowledge of God and Christ, we will have many opportunities to exercise the seven Spirits of God.”[1]

Conclusion

What are the seven spirits of God in Revelation? They are the seven lamps of fire burning before His throne, the lightning, “the living creatures” but really they are spirits which belong to God.

All the seven Spirits of God are connected. No spirit operates alone.

Therefore, wisdom works with understanding, counsel works with might, and knowledge functions with the fear of God. Each spirit has several interconnectivity to every other spirit and all operate via the Spirit of the Lord.

The example above was not to compare the “living creatures” with them but to show that both are spirits. And this is true despite their different descriptions.

For one is living creatures and the other is lamps of burning fire.

However, heaven is a spiritual place. Therefore, only spirits can live there or be there.

So, we conclude that even though the Bible refers to the seven Spirits of God as seven lamps of fire burning before the throne in heaven they are indeed spirits. They are Spirits of God because they belong to Him.

I’m confused where you said the Lord’s number is eight…
“Therefore, God consists of eight spirits—seven Spirits of God and the Spirit, which is God. This means that eight, and not seven, is the number of God.” When one of the spirits is the fear of God…and I’m confused on how God would fear himself.
