Why Many Oppose the Name of Jesus?
I shall investigate three main ways the name of Jesus Christ is different from other names. Prophets of God foretold the name of Jesus; angels of God announced and instructed it, and it is unique in nature and meaning.
All the prophets from Moses to John foretold the birth of Jesus Christ. However, Isaiah is a major contributor because he foretold his name and the circumstances surrounding his birth.
Therefore, unlike now where parents decide on a name for their children, the name of “Jesus” is different. The Lord God Himself decided that the name Jesus is suitable for His only begotten son.
So, the Lord dispatched Isaiah, as an Ambassador of Heaven, to speak on His behalf. He informed us whom shall give birth to Jesus; his gender; and his name.
The Name of Jesus is Different
Consequently, he said through Isaiah:
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).
This prophecy was made to the Hebrew Nation. They waited and watched for its fulfillment. Therefore, we observed as Isaiah reinforced this promise to them.
He wrote: “For unto us [Israel] a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
Above, even though the scripture above says “his name” then it lists five “names” but those are not names but titles. They represent different roles the Son of the virgin will fulfill.
The name of Jesus is so distinct that it grants total access to the “whole armour of God” to Believers.
What are the Names of Jesus Christ?
Don’t allow that list to confuse you. Don’t be wondering, “What are the names of Jesus Christ?” He has but one name: Jesus.
As a result, you may be wondering: “What is Jesus’ full name?”
However, bearing in mind that physically Jesus Christ came from a Jewish or Hebrews lineage. Their naming system is different from ours.
Back then, they didn’t follow a tradition of supplying a first name and a last name to their children. Instead, they would assign names to them based on meanings.
Most times the diction for those names evolve from the circumstances surrounding the birth, the place of birth, and in some instances, the Lord would intervene and supply a name for the child.

What does the Name Samuel Mean?
For example, Hannah named her first child and son: Samuel. Her reason: “because I have asked him of the Lord”. This is the meaning for the name Samuel. He had no last name.
“Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord”, (1 Samuel 1:20).
Similarly, Moses got his name because of where Pharaoh’s daughter found him. The Bible makes no mention of Moses’ mother giving him any other name.
“And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water” (Exodus 2:10).
What is the Meaning of Moses?
Owing to the fact that one of Pharaoh’s daughter servants retrieved Moses in a basket from the River Nile, she named him “Moses” (Exodus 2:1-8).
As was the case with the naming of Samuel, so too is it with Moses, for she gave the reason and meaning of the name. She established his name as Moses “because I drew him out of the water” (Exodus 2:10).
Therefore the name Moses means, drawn from the water. He has no last name.
What does the name of Jesus mean?
Therefore, the naming of Jesus is consistent with Jewish traditions and with the Scriptures. The Hebrew people having full knowledge of the promise of God waited for the birth of Jesus.
According to Matthew, in the fullness of time an angel of God, in a dream, informed Joseph of a number of things. He told him why he should marry Mary despite her being pregnant with a child that wasn’t his; of the child’s gender; of his name; and of the meaning of his name.
“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
Here we see that Jesus means Savior. Why? He will save his people from their sins.
Now, all this was prophesied by Isaiah to happen. Jesus got his name from his father. His name is heavenly.
Do you know any reason the name of Jesus faces opposition?
Today, which another person could make such a claim about his or her name? This is one reason the name Jesus Christ faces so much violence and opposition. Hell is coming against it (Matthew 11:12).
“Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel [Immanuel], which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:22-23 and Isaiah 7:14).
The Name of Jesus is Consistent with Traditions
Therefore, Jesus means Savior. The Savior is also Emmanuel, which means “God with us”. So, Jesus is our Savior who is Emmanuel for he is God with us.
In closing, his name is consistent with Jewish traditions and a fulfillment of prophecy. Consequently, he has no last name for his name is Jesus. This is his full name.
However, quite frequently the Bible refers to him as Jesus Christ. This seemingly last name of “Christ” I will explain at a later time.
The name of Jesus is different from all other Bible names in its very nature. The Bible first mentions it in the book of Acts.
“And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus”, (Acts 4:18).
Understanding the time of this Scripture is crucial. Then, their manner of speaking and writing was different from ours today.
What Does the Name of Jesus Imply to You?
“The name of Jesus” seems to imply that there is another name. Nevertheless, it simply means the name belonging to the person “Jesus”.
If many people understand this they will never ask: “What is the real name of Jesus?” The answer: Jesus.
Finally, the name of Jesus is different from other names because it’s one of few names that originates in heaven. The Lord foretold it millennia before it happened and was announced by angels. It means savior.
Consequently, this name describes the journey of the Lord God becoming man, as the son of the virgin, as Immanuel, God with us, to save us from our sins. The Lord God named His Son–Jesus.
But the people called him Christ. This is like his surname. Therefore, we have the name Jesus Christ.
There is no other name like this name in the heavens above or on the earth beneath.
The name of Jesus is the only name that commands the worship and obeisance of all.
Therefore, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).
