Day of Pentecost Invokes Variety of Responses

The Day of Pentecost came and so too did a variety of responses to it. But one man has a different response to it.

“All were” in amazement, but some “were in doubt”, and others asked: What is the meaning of this? (Acts 2:12).

Some people were mocking, saying “these men are full of new wine”(Acts 2:13).

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words

For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day” (Acts 2:14-15).

Apostle Peter explains the meaning of what was happening on the Day of Pentecost. This is Peter’s first sermon since Jesus left for heaven. He explained Pentecost to the people of Jerusalem.

So, let’s continue our Book of Acts Bible Study. Today’s Scripture reference comes mainly from Acts 2:12-21.

The Day of Pentecost And Skepticisms

On the Day of Pentecost, Apostle Peter commenced putting to rest the skepticism and the ignorance of the people in Jerusalem concerning the Holy Ghost.

Apostle Peter continued his first sermon since the ascension of Jesus to heaven. He explained the cause of Pentecost.

Peter told them that what they were witnessing was the fulfillment of a particular prophecy.

He says: “But this [the one hundred twenty disciples speaking in tongues] is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel” (Acts 2:16).

But he didn’t stop there for he recounts Joel’s prophecy to explain their behavior.

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17).

He didn’t give them a different explanation from the Scriptures. He explained the Scriptures to them.

They Didn’t Have a Different Response to The Holy Ghost

And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; … they shall prophesy” (Acts 2:18).

And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke” (Acts 2:19).

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come” (Acts 2:20).

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Ghost did not come quietly. He comes with much excitement, noise, and attention-grabbing activities. Consequently, when the Holy Ghost comes the Church is never quiet or silent.

As a result of the excitement and noise from speaking with tongues, many people of Jerusalem came because they were curious. The Lord has ways of getting our attention. Don’t ignore the meetings that He has orchestrated for you to learn about Jesus. Don’t turn your back on it.

Peter Explains the Day of Pentecost

Generally, though these people of Jerusalem wanted to know: What is the meaning of Pentecost?

Apostle Peter, explains that the Day Pentecost happens to fulfill the Scriptures. However, he never mentioned that two other prophets of God foretold Pentecost. He only spoke of the Prophet Joel.

Thus, he ends his explanation of what happened on the Day of Pentecost.

Then, he informs us of a number of things that God plans to do before the day of the Lord, (Acts 2:19).

Finally, he tells us about the power that’s resident in the name of the Lord.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).
