These are some of the crucial questions that I shall address in this brief Bible study!
However, first, I want to answer the questions: “What is an archangel, and Who is an archangel?
These responses shall set the stage to supply details concerning the archangel, Michael.
What Is An Archangel?
An archangel is an angel who is in charge of and possesses authority over many other angels.
He is like a Captain in the army. But in Michael’s case, he is a Prince in Heaven over God’s angels.
Who Is An Archangel?
So, for me to answer, who is an Archangel, I must talk about the Archangel Michael for he is the only one?
There is no other archangel in heaven except Michael. He is the angel with the highest authority over other angels there.
How Many Archangels Are in Heaven?
The Bible informs us that he has authority over many angels in heaven.
“… There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,”
Revelation 12:7.
In the quotation above, note that it says, “Michael and his angels” fought against the Devil and his angels.
This quotation, informs us that Michael is an archangel because he has authority over other angels in heaven, to the extent that he coordinates them in the battle against the opposition.
This was a literal “war in heaven” for this is not a figure of speech.
What Is The Story of Michael The Archangel?
Why is he the archangel?
Michael is the archangel because the Lord God made him the head over all the other angels in heaven.
He is a cherub that the Lord God created to do crucial tasks.
However, he doesn’t deliver special messages from God for that is one of Gabriel’s main roles.
Nevertheless, the Lord has special assignments that only he alone could accomplish!
For example, he provided explanations and understanding to Daniel concerning his visions for the end times.
He, and his angels, fought with Satan, in heaven, which resulted in the expulsion of him and his angels from heaven.
Additionally, in the last day, he will call all the dead-in-Christ to live again with the voice of God.
These are duties that only a chief prince could accomplish. The archangel Michael is the only Chief Prince of heaven.
Why Is Archangel Michael Important?
He is repeatedly depicted as the “great captain,” the leader of the heavenly hosts, and the warrior helping the children of Israel.
How Many Chief Princes Are In Heaven?
The archangel Michael is not an ordinary angel. He is not only one of “the chief princes” but the only “chief prince” of heaven.
Daniel’s reference to him as one of “the chief princes” is merely a manner of expression and not a description of his status.
How Many Archangels Are in Heaven?
There is only one archangel in heaven and is name is Michael.
For that reason, Apostle Jude makes it very clear that heaven only has one archangel.
He informs us …
“Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke[s] thee.” Jude 1:9.
In the quotation above, the definite article, “the”, informs us that there is only one archangel in heaven, and the proper noun, Michael, identifies him!
No place in the Scriptures informs us that there is another angel like Michael; therefore, let’s not assume there is one.
I have read the accounts of many “Christian writers”, but not one of them has explained the names of the other archangels that are in heaven.
Do you know the reason? There are no others besides Michael!
But he is important not only to the Lord but also to certain residents of earth.
Archangel Michael’s Spiritual Meaning
Saint Michael, or Archangel Michael, represents the hope of Israel and the Church of Jesus Christ!
According to the Scriptures, in the Last Days, he will stand up for Israel.
They shall encounter tribulation, but the archangel Michael shall stand up for and defend them.
Similarly, in that same time, the Lord shall use his voice to signal His victory over the Devil and death.
His voice will call all Christians, living and dead, and transform us from mortal bodies to immortal ones like himself.
His voice shall change us. Vew shall all be changed by the voice of archangel Michael.
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,”
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed,” 1 Corinthians 15:51-52.
The Archangel Michael in the End Times
Michael will sound the trump of God in the Last Day!
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord,” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.
You may have read that Michael carries a sword or you may have seen pictures of him with one.
But he does not need any weapons because he is a very powerful angel.
He does not need any sword or spear for he has the power of God!
What Is The Role of The Archangel Michael?
The role of the archangel Michael is diverse. He is not only a defender of Daniel and Israel, but also a protector, the voice of God, and a captain in heaven over God’s angels.
“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.” Daniel 10:13
He represents the Lord God in many instances in the Bible.
Whenever it speaks of the Angel of God, this is a reference to Michael the archangel.
What Does Michael Look Like?

An archangel holds the highest position amongst angels in heaven. He has authority over all other heavenly beings.
The archangel Michael is the Chief Prince in heaven. The Lord God created him to accomplish critical tasks on His behalf.
There is only one archangel and he is Michael!
