What Is The Leviathan?
Many Christians, pastors, Believers, avid Bible students, Bible readers, and theologians all desire to know about the Leviathan in the Bible.
The question is not, “What Was The Leviathan” but, rather “What Is The Leviathan“? The reason: He is still alive and active!
Similarly, the question is not “What is a Leviathan in the Bible” but “Who is the Leviathan in the Bible“? There is only one Leviathan and he is not a mythical beast!
However, before I reveal who he is, first allow me time to expound on the Leviathan in the Bible.
I shall show who and what he is, what he symbolizes, his characteristics, and finally other names for him.
However, the answer to the caption question depends on who you ask.
If you ask a Christian what is the Leviathan, he would say it is a “crooked serpent”, a “piercing serpent” or a “dragon”?
But, the Leviathan in the Bible, has many other names.
Nevertheless, the Holy Bible substantiates these claims. In the Scripture below, observe that it describes the Leviathan both as a serpent and a dragon.
Is The Leviathan Still Alive?
“In that day the Lord with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
Isaiah 27:1
Yes, the Leviathan is still alive but recall that the Bible uses his name symbolically.
Consequently, the Scripture verse above is a prophecy concerning the end and demise of the Leviathan. But there is not a huge crooked serpent slithering outside.
And there is none in the sea.
Neither is there a dragon on the prowl seeking people to devour. Thus, in all these instances, the Bible uses the Leviathan symbolically.
To fully comprehend the Leviathan in the Bible and what he symbolizes, we must know and comprehend all his different names and make the proper interconnections amongst all of them.
What Does The Leviathan Symbolize In The Bible?
The Leviathan – That Piercing and Crooked Serpent
Is a symbol of Satan.
Among all the beasts of the field that God had created, he is the smartest.
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Genesis 3:3
Therefore, God created Leviathan.
There is no animal or human (except a Believer led by the Holy Ghost) who is smarter than this serpent.
The Holy Bible tells me and all Students of The Word that The Piercing Serpent, (Satan), is wiser than Daniel.
The Leviathan Is Smartest of Them All
“Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee.”
Ezekiel 28:3
Because of the advanced wisdom of the Serpent and where he resides the Lord did something unusual. After He put Moses to sleep He buried him.
He has never done this before or after. Why?
Because He does not desire the Leviathan to know the location of the grave of Moses!
We are aware that he wants this knowledge because he contended with the Archangel about the grave of Moese!
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Jude 1:9
Leviathan – The Dragon In The Sea
Symbolizes the Devil in the people. This is a general statement for it encompasses all the peoples of the earth.
Therefore, the Leviathan is in all nations of the earth.
The Scripture above (Isaiah 27:1) informs us that the Lord shall kill the dragon that’s in the sea. However, dragons do not live in water or the sea.
They reside on the land. Therefore, that is a figurative usage of both the dragon and the sea. The Dragon is the Leviathan. Yet the sea represents the people.
The Good Lord Jesus Christ opened my eyes to the meaning of this more than thirty years ago. Therefore, today, I’m happy to share this knowledge with you.
What Does The Word Leviathan Mean?
So today, the diction that you shall receive for Leviathan will depend on its source. If it came from:
- Dictionary
- Wikipedia
- The Bible
- Christianity
- Juadesim
- Satanism
- Blogs
But he is not some mythical creature that was in existence. He is still alive and wrecking lives.
Is The Leviathan a Metaphor In The Bible?
To comprehend what the Leviathan symbolizes in the Bible we must appreciate that all the names for it point to one being.
Thus, in the Bible, the Leviathan symbolizes Satan or the Devil.
First, the “crooked”, or “piercing serpent” symbolizes Satan.
I expounded on this in another Bible Study explaining why Lucifer is the Son of The Morning.
Second, the Bible speaks about the Leviathan but describes the Dragon.
Revelation 12:9 tells us that:
“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
Additionally, this next Scripture also substantiates that the Leviathan is the Dragon.
I was humbled when the Lord Jesus Christ opened my understanding to this.
Who Is The Leviathan The Bible Talks About?
He is the Old Dragon!
So, go with me to Job 41:1-34. This chapter talks about the Levithian but the total imagery is completely about the Dragon.
Nowhere in this narration mention The Crooked Serpent. But it doesn’t need to because the Old Dragon is the Piercing Serpent.
Observe and pay attention to verses 24 and 34.
“His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.”
Job 41:24
This hardness of the heart present in him is the reason stubbornness is such a deadly sin! The Lord hates it. It’s always a feature of The Dragon (Leviathan).
“He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.”
Job 41:34
Additionally, anywhere you find pride the spirit of Satan is present. The Lord hates pride.
So, here the Lord is using the features of a dragon to point out the qualities and character of Satan.
The Dragon symbolizes Satan!
But not just any quality of him but that feature that he refuses to give the Lord, mainly his heart.

Conclusion
Why Did God Create Leviathan In The Bible?
For the same purpose, He created you and me. All of God’s creation serves one purpose to Him. Worship!
In heaven, Lucifer was the Worship Leader.
That’s the reason the Bible informs us that the “workmanship of” his “tabrets and of” his “pipes was prepared in” him “in the day that” he was “created,” Ezekiel 28:13.
Tabrets and pipes were key components of the musical worship of God in the earlier days!
He created the Leviathan to worship Him then he had another name, Lucifer.
The Leviathan is the Dragon and the Dragon is Satan.
Similarly, the Leviathan is the Serpent. He is the Crooked, Piercing, or Old Serpent who is also Satan.
In closing, many Christians don’t know this but all Satanists are aware of this.
So, whether it’s in Christianity or Judaism or Satanism the Leviathan means the same thing: Satan.
