Defining the Name of the Lord

Let’s define the name of our Lord. According to Dictionary by Merriam-Webster, a name is “a word or phrase that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing.”

Hence, Father, Son, or Holy Ghost—The Godhead—could never be a name. None of those roles “constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing”, such as Jesus Christ of Nazareth. None!

Consequently, you are unable to utilize any of them or any combination of them to call, know, or identify any person or object.

The Godhead is not an object or a person.

Is Father the Name of the Lord?

Father is as general or generic as Son or Holy Ghost. “Father” is the distinctive designation of which person? And I’m not talking about the title like “Father Williams”.

Again, according to Merriam-Webster, Father is “the first person of the” Godhead. But what does the Holy Bible say about Father?

But who is the Father? What is his name? Which person is that? Father is the distinctive designation of whom in the Godhead? Is the number of a position in a sequence, a name? There first must be a name for this to be true.

Nevertheless, this dictionary’s first definition for father is “a man who has begotten a child”. Without any doubt, we know that the Holy Ghost is the father of Jesus Christ. Jesus is His son. He’s the only begotten Son of the Father. But God is a Spirit, (John 4:24). He’s not a man. He’s not a person, yet He has a name.

The Name of the Father Must Have this Feature

Whom do you desire to call or identify by saying, Father? In other words, what is the name of this father?

For example, if I enter into a room full of men who are fathers, how could I identify any one of them by the name “father”? It’s not possible, for each one has an identical name. None has a name that is unique.

Therefore, should I go inside and desire to speak with only one of them privately, I couldn’t, because if I say, “Father could we talk over here”, all the other fathers would come?

The Lord Gave His Son a Name!

Again, according to Merriam-Webster, SON is “the second person of the” Godhead.

But who is that second person? What is the name of that person? Which person is that? Son is the distinctive designation of whom in the Godhead?

Its other definition for a son is “a human male offspring, especially of human beings”. But the Lord God is a Spirit. Nevertheless, the Son of God has a name: Jesus.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

So, is the Godhead a collection of persons? And even if you want to think of it as a “personage” it makes no difference.

The Lord Reveals the Name of the Holy Ghost!

As you may have guessed, according to Merriam-Webster, Holy Ghost “is the third person of the” Godhead. Who is this third person and what is his name? Or Holy Ghost is the distinctive designation for whom? What is his name?

However, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, gives us the answer for he declares that he comes in his Father’s name.

Yes, Jesus admits that his Father has a name, but some “Christians” refuse to acknowledge it.

CONCLUSION

The “Godhead” is the only biblical noun or adjective for the three roles of God relative to humanity. There is no synonym for it that doesn’t attempt to corrupt the truth of God’s Word.

Consequently, the only diction we should adopt for this is Godhead. This is biblical and the nomenclature the Lord wants us to employ when we describe His three major roles in our lives.

The Godhead does not consist of three persons. The first thing we must be aware of is the fact that there are no persons in heaven. Moreover, the Lord God is not a person. He is a Spirit, (John 4:24).

Second, we are the “offspring of God”. Luke, the Beloved Physician says it best: “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device” (Acts 17:29).

The Lord is Not Three

Then, Father, Son, or Holy Ghost is not a name. A name is “a word or phrase that” establishes the unique “designation of a person or thing.” Each of these lacks “designation”. There is no means to call, identify or reference each with a title. But a name does just that.

Consequently, every father has a name. Father, is not the first person in the Godhead. The Godhead is not plural. It’s one. One Lord God with three major roles relative to humanity. The Godhead is one. Yes, it is one!

As it was for Father so too is it for Son. Every son has a name. Therefore, Son is not the second person of the Godhead. Son is the designation of whom?

Again, the Lord God is not a “person”.
The Son is Jesus Christ. This is his name. And it is unique to one and only one person: the Son of God.

Do you agree that the name of the Son of God is Jesus Christ? Jesus admits that His Father has a name. He confesses that he comes in his Father’s name; therefore, by agreeing that the name of the Son is Jesus you have unwittingly or inadvertently conceded that the Father’s name is the same as the Son: Jesus (John 5:43).

No Confusion in Heaven Over the Name

Many persons could possess identical names but we would still own the ability to call them and to identify each.

The only time we would experience problems in identifying each, is when they are all together in one place at the same time and we don’t know them.

However, with the Godhead we don’t have that difficulty.

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” (1 John 5:7).

The Father is the Word; and the Word is the Holy Ghost; and Jesus is the Word and these three are one. You won’t find three thrones and three entities in heaven but one. And we know the name of the one sitting on that throne: Christ Jesus our Lord.
