In Acts 3:22 What Did Moses Say About A Prophet?
“A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me;
Apostle Peter continues his dissertation on the Day of Pentecost. He expounds to the Hebrew people all that the Scriptures say concerning a prophet who should come.
Today, we continue our Book of Acts Bible Study. Our reference is Acts 3:17-26.
Therefore, he excuses their “ignorance” in denying Jesus Christ.
“And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers” (Acts 3:17).
Then he informed them of the certainty of God’s Words. So, he brings to their
Consequently, he says: “But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled” (Acts 3:18).
Repentance and Conversion
But Apostle Peter has a broader objective in mind. The state of the hearts of the People of God is on his mind.
With this in mind, he preached,
“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19).
Note the prerequisite for the remission of sins. Repentance then conversion and then removal of sins.
An appropriate synonym for this is the remission of sins.
This order is crucial. Many desire either conversion or removal of sins but they are not ready to repent.
However, with God, the heart always comes first, for He requires obedience. Obey Him!
Peter speaks of a particular time. “The times of refreshing”, he says come “from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19).
Moses’ Prophecy About a Prophet Similar to Himself
According to Peter, at that time the Lord removed our sins.
At this time, the Lord “shall send Jesus Christ” (Acts 3:20). Of course, Peter reminds them that they heard of him before. The apostles preached about him.
“Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:21).
So, heaven must “receive” Jesus Christ “until the restitution of all things”. At which time “all things” will revert to their former state, which was the state before Adam sinned.
“For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you” (Acts 3:22 & Deuteronomy 18:15).
Moses Said – I Will Raise a Prophet From Among You!
Therefore, Jesus is a prophet like Moses because he too is of Hebrew descent. As Moses was established by God so too was Jesus established by Him. He sent both of them to His people.
Even Moses instructs that we should obey “all” that Jesus commands us. Consequently, he supersedes all prophets.
“And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people” (Acts 3:23).
Are you obeying the Lord? Are your beliefs in accordance with his commands?
A Prophet of the Jews
“Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days” (Acts 3:24).
The Lord spoke about the happenings of the Day of Pentecost long before, they happened.
“Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed” (Acts 3:25).
Finally, there is no doubt that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he is the prophet that Moses told them would come.
“Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (Acts 3:26).
